With only one week left until the OUA Championships, the Waterloo Warriors split up last weekend and competed at the University of Guelph, the University of Toronto, the University of Ottawa, and Cornell University. There were some outstanding results, including 10 lifetime personal bests, 8 season bests, and 2 CIS-worthy results.
At the University of Guelph, veteran Kristen Flanagan (Kitchener) won the women's 1500m race. Establishing her lead after a slow opening lap, Flanagan crossed the finish line with a time of 4:55.03.
Over in Toronto, the sprints crew had some excellent results. In the 60m dash, Sian Smart (Kingston)'s preliminary time of 7.89 advanced her to the final, where she cut her time down to 7.88. The CIS-hopeful women's 4x200m team destroyed their old personal best time by over a second, running 1:42.50 and improving their CIS ranking to #8. Naomi Lance (Kitchener)'s blazing personal best split time of 25.1 was the fastest of the team (#4 UW All Time). Rookie Kelsi Darmon (Fergus) tied her personal best of 25.6 and veterans Jenny Carrique (Kitchener) and Tegan Sauer (Kitchener) both ran 25.8 splits.
In the men's 3000m, Chris Moore (Toronto) ran a tactical race against a deep field to come away with a new personal best of 8:54.11 and a seventh place finish overall.
After a long drive to Cornell University, the sprints crew continued to impress. In the 60m preliminary round, Tegan Sauer (Kitchener) and Kelsi Darmon (Fergus) ran times of 7.86 and 7.99 respectively. Sauer advanced to the final where she ran a season's best time of 7.83, which is the fastest 60m result for Warrior women this year. Not long after, Sauer competed in the 200m dash where she ran a lifetime personal best of 26.43, setting her at #4 on the UW All Time list.
In the 300m dash, Jenny Carrique (Kitchener) ran a huge season's best time of 41.70, while Naomi Lance (Kitchener) dominated the competition with an incredible lifetime personal best of 40.19. This is the 5th best time in UW history and ranks her #4 in the CIS for the event. Lance hopes to secure an OUA medal next week, along with her ticket to the CIS Championships in March.
On the men's side, Samuel Martinello ran lifetime personal bests in both the 200m and 300m events. His 200m time of 22.97 sets him at #4 on the UW All Time list while his 300m time of 36.11 earned him a second place finish. James Milton (Kitchener) competed in the 3000m and ran his way to a 4th place finish with a time of 8:43.28.
To end the weekend, the women's team captured gold in the 4x400m relay, with an impressive personal best time of 3:59.37. All four girls ran season best split times, with Lance running the fastest split of 57.5.
The Warriors will travel to York University next weekend to compete in the OUA Championships.
