The Waterloo Warriors had a great weekend with 9 lifetime personal bests and 2 season personal bests. Some of the athletes travelled to the University of Toronto to compete at the Sharon Anderson Meet, while others competed at the Guelph New Year Opener at the University of Guelph.
In Toronto, the first event on the track was the women's 60m dash, where rookie Kelsi Darmon (Fergus) flew through the finish line for a preliminary time of 8.05. This lifetime personal best put her in 8th place and secured her spot in the final. Determined to further improve her time in the final, Darmon blazed out of the blocks and raced her way to a 7thplace finish, with another lifetime personal best of 8.01 and a place on the top 10 all-time list for UW. Darmon hopes to break the eight-second barrier at the next meet.
For the men's 60m dash, rookie Ali Elkanuni (Tipoli) had a great preliminary round race where he tied his personal best time of 7.31. Ranked 5th, he easily advanced to the final. Not wanting to tie his time again, Elkanuni managed to fight his way to a 7.30 lifetime personal best in the final, placing 5th overall.
Rookie Rachel Bronzovich (Oakville) battled her way right to the grueling end and secured an amazing 4th place finish. Bronzovich ran 0.4 seconds faster than her previous lifetime personal running 1:41.71.
On the distance side, rookie Nicholash Bedi (Waterloo) raced the men's 1500m and ran to a 4th place finish. Bedi clocked a great time of 4:18.19. Rookie Chris Moore (Toronto)competed in the men's 3000m and raced his way to a silver medal with an excellent time of 9:04.28 showing great potential as a first year Warrior.
In the women's 300m dash, Naomi Lance (Kitchener) continues to dominate and rookie Kelsi Darmon (Fergus) shows great promise. Lance and Darmon secured 5th and 6thplace finishes respectively. Lance blazed past the competition and won her heat by more than 1.5 seconds, with an amazing time of 41.60 seconds. Darmon also won her heat by almost a second with a lifetime personal best of 42.46 seconds, which is well under the OUA standard.
In Guelph, the distance team showed great promise early in the season. Veteran Kristen Flanagan (Kitchener) led the team with an impressive run in the women's 1500m. Flanagan raced to a 5th place finish with a time of 5:01.58, just shy of breaking the five-minute barrier. Next up in the women's 1000m, rookie Olivia Scagnato crossed the finish line with a time of 3:24.39. That time was good for a 4th place finish. On the men's side, rookie Rawle Groothuizen (Guelph) covered the 1000m in a respectable time of 2:45.68, earning himself a 6th place finish.
Two more results worth mentioning are the incredible 3000m times ran by Erin Merkley (Smith Falls) and Alexandra McGowan (Carp) in Ottawa from late December. The ladies ran excellent races, crossing the finish line 2nd and 3rd. With times of 10:18.66 and 10:18.70 respectively, both have obtained the OUA standard and look to improve on those times as the season progresses.
Next weekend the Warriors will be travelling to the University of Windsor for the very important Can-Am Classic.
