A select few Warriors travelled to the University of Windsor last weekend to compete at the CIS Track & Field Championships. Although a small team, they came out with some incredible results and the women's team finished 16th overall out of 22 teams that competed at the Championships.
On Thursday, the women's 4x200m team competed in the preliminary round. Going into the competition ranked 10th, the ladies knew they had to run a very smooth race to be top 8 and make finals. Rookie Kelsi Darmon (Fergus) started off the relay out of the blocks, running a very fast personal best split time of 25.5. The handoff to Naomi Lance (Kitchener) was a bit messy, but Lance still managed to run a blazing split time of 24.8.Jenny Carrique (Kitchener) received the baton next, fighting around the track to the final handoff to Tegan Sauer (Kitchener). Carrique and Sauer ran split times of 25.7 and 25.6 respectively. The Warriors' overall time of 1:41.89 was their second best of the year and improved their ranking to 7th place, advancing them to the final.
On Friday, Naomi Lance (Kitchener) competed individually in the 300m dash. In the preliminaries, Lance flew out of the blocks and ran a very strong and well-executed race. Lance easily advanced to the final with an impressive lifetime personal best of 40.10, which ranked her 4th overall.
Later Friday night, Naomi Lance (Kitchener) stepped in the blocks again for the 300m final. Running against a very competitive field, Lance fought her way around the track for a 5th place finish with a time of 40.50. This earned Waterloo 4 points for the overall CIS team competition and added another great accomplishment toNaomi Lance (Kitchener)'s spectacular season.
On Saturday, the 4x200m team was up again for the final round and determined to finish the season with a bang. Kelsi Darmon (Fergus) had another outstanding leg, running a split time of 25.6 and smoothly handing off to Naomi Lance (Kitchener). Fighting to catch the next team, Lance flew around the track for personal best split time of 24.7. Jenny Carrique (Kitchener) got the baton next and ran a huge season's best and tied her personal best split of 25.4. Lastly, Tegan Sauer (Kitchener) anchored the team with a 25.7, crossing the finish line for an overall time of 1:41.57. This well-earned personal best placed the Warriors 6th overall in the CIS and places them at #4 on the UW All Time list. The team earned another 3 points for the CIS team competition for a total of 7.
Overall the team had 104 life time personal bests, 49 season's bests this season and nearly 50 UW Top Ten List results. This concludes a very successful season for the Warriors track & field team. With only three graduating athletes this young team's future shows a lot of potential for even greater success in the seasons to come.
