Warriors Represent Waterloo Well at CIS Championships

March 7-9, 2008 – CIS Championships, Montreal
By Colin Lawrence

A small but talented group of ten Warriors competed in Montreal this past weekend at the CIS Track and Field Championships. Waterloo was represented by the men’s 4 x 200m relay and both the men’s and women’s 4 x 400m relay teams. Jenna Bell, the only individual qualifier, represented waterloo in the shot put, 60m hurdles and the pentathlon. For many of the athletes the championship would be their last competition as a Waterloo Warrior and one last opportunity to wear proudly the black and gold colors.

The meet commenced on Thursday with the entire day dedicated to the pentathlon. As per usual, Jenna Bell displayed that she is truly one of the top athletes in the CIS with solid performances all around. Jenna ran a personal best (pb) in the 800m run with a time of 2:34.65 and also threw a huge 1.06m pb in the shot-put of 12.55m. In the 60m hurdles Jenna posted a quick time in 9.18s. In the long jump and high jump Jenna jumped 5.26m and 1.44m. These performances earned Jenna a very respectable 7th place finish while picking up some points for the women’s team.
The Friday followed with Jeremiah Derksen, Kirk Ewen, Jacob Muirhead and Kyle Raymond running in the heats of the men’s 4 x 200m. Both Kirk and Kyle ran personal bests in times of 21.9s and 22.5s. Jeremiah and Jacob also contributed to the performance with very fast times of 22.6s and 23.2s. As a team they ran the fastest for the season in a very notable time of 1.30.58 which placed them 10th overall. Jenna also competed in the individual 60m hurdles and shot-put. Even though slightly tired from Thursday’s pentathlon, Jenna still managed to excel by placing 12th in the hurdles and 7th in the shot-put.

The final day of the competition was filled with excitement as both the men’s and women’s 4 x 400m teams were competing. The women’s team was represented by Kate Bickle, Cindy Willits, Jaime Hauseman, and Jenna Bell. The team had a solid performance with a time of 4:02.52 which placed them 12th overall. On the men’s side, the team consisted of Kirk Ewen, Jeremiah Derksen, Colin Lawrence and rookie sensation Jacob Muirhead. The men ran a spectacular race with everybody running life time personal bests. They crossed the line in a time of 3:21.91 placing them 8th overall and picking up some points for the men’s team. The time was the second fastest in the history of Warrior Track and Field and only four hundredths of a second of the current standing record.

Head coach Jason Dockendorff mentioned that he is very impressed with the team’s results at the championships this season.  Also that, “…pretty much all of our season goals were accomplished, with many being exceeded significantly. It was great to see many of our valuable veterans graduate on a high note. We are losing some people this year who have been extremely valuable to our program.”

The next item on the agenda for the Warriors is a little rest and relaxation and possibly some catching up on studying.

February 22-23, 2008 - OUA Championships, Windsor

Warriors Bust-out Impressive Results, CIS Qualifications, and a New Varsity Record at OUA Championships
By Jenna Bell

This past weekend the warriors traveled west to Windsor for the OUA Championships.  Waterloo headed into this weekend with the promise of CIS rankings in both the Men’s and Women’s relays, and looking to put out their best performances to help in the team scoring competition.

The competition started with the pentathlon, a well represented event for the warriors.  Women’s captain Jenna Bell along with male veterans Ryan Wight and Aaron Bates participated in 5 consecutive events throughout Friday afternoon.  In the end Bell finished the competition earning a bronze medal and bettering her season’s best score by 21 points.  Bell’s pentathlon hurdle time (9.14 seconds) and pentathlon score (3296) currently ranks her 12th and 8th in the country respectively.  Jenna’s bronze medal performance secured Waterloo’s first medal since the multiple medal season of 2003.

Ryan Wight and Aaron Bates both accomplished incredible personal best results throughout the pentathlon –Ryan had a personal best in every event and overall score- and placed them 6th and 8th respectively.  Following the pentathlon’s came the aggressive 4x200m relays.  The men and women were well represented in the “fast” heats of their races.  The men’s team (Jeremiah Derksen, Kirk Ewen,  Kyle Raymond, and Jacob Muirhead) placed 6th  while the women (Kate Bickle, Jaime Hauseman, Cindy Willits and Julia Malleck) placed 7th earning points for the team competition.  As the championships continued Bell returned to the shot put circle for the individual shot put competition.  Needing a 12m throw to qualify for CIS, Bell threw 3 consecutive life-time personal bests and varsity records with a final distance of 12.40m to secure a 5th place finish in the shot put event and rank her top 8 in the country!  This throw beats the previous varsity record held by Kristy Heemskerk of 11.76cm, dating back to 2001. Bell also went on to finish 8th in the individual hurdles.

Feeling the adrenaline in the air, the 1500m went off with a bang.  The Warrior women (Julia Malleck, Kelly-Lynne Spettigue, and Laura Sardone) finished their races with 3 impressive personal bests!  Finishing up day one the men’s 4x800m relay team (Colin Lawrence, Colin McLean, Wesley George, and Alex Magdanz) placed 8th.

Day 2 held the ever exciting fast heats, summed up with the aggressive 4x400m relays.  The warriors headed into the day’s events with shear determination and came out with impressive results. Captain Kirk Ewen ran a personal best time of 35.95 seconds and finished 8th respectively in a highly competitive event!  Julia Malleck made her move in the women’s 1k to post a time of 2:54.17, placing her 6th in the event and moving her up to the top 12 in the CIS.  Following this impressive race Julia also anchored the women’s 4x400m team (Kate Bickle, Jaime Hauseman, Cindy Willits and Julia) to another 6th place finish.  The women are currently ranked 11th in the CIS, and anxiously await the close competitive atmosphere of the CIS championships.  The men made their mark in the 4x400m relay (Kirk Ewen, Colin Lawrence, Jacob Muirhead and Jeremiah Derksen) by finishing a very respectable 5th. They currently sit 7th in the country.

Head Coach Jason Dockendorff was extremely happy with the results of the meet. He went on to say that, “There were a ton of exciting, and surprising, results from this weekend. Our small team did an outstanding job in coming together for our goal to do as well as we can in the team standings.  Our women’s team doubled their points compared to last year despite having half as many people. That is an outstanding feat. We may have sacrificed some performance quality by running some our athletes hard the week prior, but this has already paid its dividends as we’ve qualified many of our relay teams to nationals. But I am happy to say that I don’t believe we lost-out on any points because of it.  Team points at the OUA Championships and qualifying athletes to nationals are our main team goals.”

Overall the Warriors faired well.  The women and men finished 7th and 9th.   Waterloo’s top warriors will be battling it out again March 6-8 in Montreal.

CIS Qualifiers:
Julia Malleck - 1000m
Jenna Bell - Pentathlon, 60mH, SP
Women’s 4x400m relay (Kate Bickle, Jaime Hauseman, Cindy Willits, Jenna Bell, Julia Malleck)
Men’s 4x200m relay (Jeremiah Derksen, Kirk Ewen, Kyle Raymond, Jacob Muirhead)
Men’s 4x400m relay (Kirk Ewen, Jeremiah Derksen, Colin Lawrence, Jacob Muirhead)

Double Wammy – Last Chance Before OUA’s!

February 15, 2008
By Jaime Hauseman

Friday February 15th the Warriors traveled to University of Toronto where they competed at the Hal Brown Memorial Meet. This weekend was the last weekend of competition before the track team ventures to Windsor for OUA finals.

The men brought home 3 personal bests this weekend! The notable performances were from freshman Hugo Lopez, with a lifetime personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.96, which he has been striving for all season. Also a freshman, Colin Mclean ran over a second faster in the 600m dash with a time of 1:26. 79. Another personal best came from 2nd year athlete Luke Govia in the men’s 60m dash. With a time of 7.21 Luke clinched 2nd place!

Another group of selected athletes traveled to McGill to take advantage of the fast track to lay down some serious times to secure their CIS rankings. The group consisted of the women’s and men’s 4 X 200m and 4 by 400m relay teams, Wesley George (3000m) as well as Julia Malleck (1000m). Beginning with the women’s relays, Kate Bickle, Jaime Hauseman, Cindy Willits and Jenna Bell put down a time of 1:45.88 in the 200m relay. This moved them to a 12 position in CIS. A season’s best in the 400m relay was next with a time of 401.54, which bumped them to 10th place in CIS. Kate Bickle led the relay teams with the fasts splits.

On the men's side, the 4 by 200m relay team, which consisted of Kirk Ewen, Jeremiah Derkson, Kyle Raymond and Jacob Muirhead, moved up to 7th in the CIS ranking with a time of 1:31.08. The 4 by 400m relay team ran a time of 3:24.25, which placed them 9th in the country. Captain, Kirk Ewen led both relay teams to season bests. In the 3000m, Weslsey George took 6 seconds off his season’s best time to make it 8:50.61.

Congratulations to all the Warriors for their successes this weekend! And good luck to them all as they travel to Windsor for OUA finals on Friday February 23rd!

Encouraging results at the York Classic

February 2, 2008 - York University Open
By: Kirk Ewen

On Feb 2nd 2008, the Warrior squad competed at the annual York University Classic.  This is the second last competition for the team before OUA Championships, so it’s time to tie-up loose ends and buckle down.

On the men’s side, Alberta native Alex Magdanz showed his fitness and determination placing 2nd in the 1000m (2:31.35s), and 1st in the 1500m (4:00.48s) bettering second place by over five seconds!  Alex is currently ranked 13th and 15th in the CIS in those events, respectively.  The sprint relays showed much improvement this weekend placing first amongst the CIS teams in the 4x200m and second in the 4x400m race.  Both teams dropped 1.5s off their season’s best times improving their rankings to 9th and 11th, respectively.  Warrior freshman, Jacob Muirhead improved his life-time bests in the sprint relays by a full second in each race.  Muirhead ran the fasted leg of the 4x400m race for the Warrior team.  Ryan Wight a fourth year veteran achieved second place in the high jump competition with a life-time best of 1.88m; he is currently ranked 16th in the CIS in the event.

On the women’s side, sophomore Kelly-Lynne Spettigue and veteran Laura Sardone went head-to-head to finish 8th and 9th in the 1500m race.  Huge life-time personal bests for these girls: Spettigue dropped 1.5s and Sardone dropped 3.5s!  Captain Kate Bickle clinched 5th in the 300m with a time of 41.61s;  Kate is currently ranked 9th in that event.

The team has next weekend off to gather themselves before the last chance qualifier held at the University of Toronto on Feb 15th.  The last chance meet is where the athletes will have a final opportunity quality, or improve their rankings, for the OUA Championships which will be held at the University of Windsor on Feb 22nd & 23rd.

Bickle dominates to rank TOP TEN in the CIS!!!

January 25/26, 2008 - McGill Team Challenge
By: Jenna Bell

This weekend the Warriors traveled to McGill with high hopes of blazing fast times.  Leading the way was female captain Kate Bickle.  Kate ran an aggressive race to post an incredible time of 40.90 seconds to place her 4th of 40 in the competition.  Kate’s time was a 0.5 second life time personal best and bettered her season’s best time by over a second!  This result now places Kate 9th in the country.

Following her lead male captain Kirk Ewen also ran himself to a 4th place finish, with a time of 36.18 seconds.  Kirk also lead the 4x400m relay team to a 2.5 second season’s best time, helping the team (Kirk Ewen, Jeremiah Derksen, Kyle Raymond, Jacob Muirhead) clinch a 7th place spot in the CIS rankings.

Other notable results included Jeremy Yang’s 5th place finish with a jump of 6.47m.  Alex Magdanz placed 6th of 52 in the 1500m with a time of 3:58.91, moving him into top 15 in the CIS and in pursuit of CIS championship qualification.  Female co-captain Jenna Bell placed 3rd in the women’s pentathlon, bettering her score to 3276, ranking her 5th in the CIS.

Injury plagued the women’s 4x400m team from participating in the race.  The women are preparing for upcoming competitions and remain ranked 7th in the CIS with their previous week’s performance.

The warriors travel to York next weekend to race on another banked track.  Geared up and ready for action, the warriors hope for more top performances!

Small numbers yield big numbers for the Warriors

January 18/19, 2008
By: Kate Bickle

This past weekend the Warriors Track & Field Team proved that a small team can be deceiving as they competed at the University of Western Don Wright Team Challenge. Although their numbers are small, the Warriors scored big in the team points race, including many top 3 finishes pushing their rankings up in the Nation.

Leading the men’s team was Jeremy Yang who jumped a season best of 6.79 metres in the long jump earning him the silver. This leap is the second best long jump performance in UW history, only 31cm off the varsity record. This result puts Jeremy 6th in the CIS and 3rd in the OUA. Jeremy is a first year athlete from Waterloo (Bluevale Collegiate) and was the OFSAA champion in the long jump last year with a jump of 7.24m. This jump that would have placed him in the top five at last year’s CIS national championships as well as break a 36 year old University of Waterloo varsity record. Keep an eye on this guy, there are big things to come.

Fellow rookie Jacob Muirhead picked up a bronze medal in the 600m with a life-time personal best of 1:26.75. The men's 4x200m relay team (Kirk Ewen, Kyle Raymond, Luke Govia, Matt Bahm) placed third. Another notable performance on the men’s side was the 4x400m team who shaved off 2 seconds from their previous time last weekend moving them up to the top 6 in the CIS.

The very small but strong women's team had strong showings in the relays placing second in the 4x200m and the 4x400m. Co-Captains Kate Bickle and Jenna Bell along with veterans Cindy Willits and Jaime Hauseman bettered their 4x200m time by 3 seconds running 1:47.95 and their 4x400m also by 3 seconds with 4:04.95, pushing both relays up into the top 7 in Canada. Kate Bickle had a strong finish in the 60m earning herself a bronze medal.

Jenna Bell travelled to Toronto the night before to compete in her first pentathlon of the season. Bell came out with 3 seasonal bests out of her 5 events and finished with 3225 points which has earned her a spot in Canada's top 5.

The Warriors are geared up and have proven to the coaches and other teams that they will be ready for battle next weekend as they travel to McGill in Montreal to compete with the Nations top athletes.

Warriors start off the New Year with a BANG!!!

January 14, 2008
By: Jenna Bell

This past weekend the Warrior Track and Field Team traveled to Windsor to compete at the 27th Annual Can Am Classic, a meet known for bringing out good performances.  This past weekend was no exception as Waterloo obtained an impressive 23 Season Personal Bests, thus improving the athletes’ positions in provincial and national rankings.

On the Women’s side, outstanding performances included Kate Bickle running an impressive 41.94 seconds in the 300m placing herself 6th in the competitive race.  Kate also led the women’s 4x400m relay team along with Jaime Hauseman, Cindy Willits and Jenna Bell to a 4th place finish with a time of 4:07.73.

On the Men’s side, Kirk Ewen and Jacob Muirhead battled it out in the 600m to finish 5th and 6th respectively.  Colin Lawrence ran a 2:31.76 in the 1000m to place 5th in the competition.  The Men’s 4x200m team (Jeremiah Derksen, Kirk Ewen, Kyle Raymond, Luke Govia) ran a 1:34.25 to place 5th, 4x400m team (Jeremiah Derksen, Kirk Ewen, Colin Lawrence and Jacob Muirhead) ran a 3:32.37 to place 4th, and 4x800m team (Colin Lawrence, Alex Magdanz, Wesley George, Colin McLean) ran a 8:11.21 to place 4th in the competition.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are showing great potential for provincial and national qualification.  Head Coach Jason Dockendorff was quite happy with the results and went on to say, “There were some signs of athlete fatigue due to the intense training the team underwent over the holiday, which was expected, but the performances were surprisingly good considering the little recovery the team has had.  The training program is working according to plan, and I know things will only get better from this point on.”

The Warrior multi-event athletes head to the University of Toronto on Friday January 18th to test their mental and physical endurance in the pentathlon.  These athletes will join the rest of the Waterloo Warriors as they battle out with Western at the Don Wright Team Challenge on Saturday the 19th.

Warriors Begin Season Long Conquest at UWO Season Opener

November 24, 2007
By Colin Lawrence

The Waterloo Warriors Track and Field team voyaged down to the southern London region this weekend for the Season Opener at the UWO Thompson Arena. The hour and half bus ride took a toll on some but many managed to endure the arduous journey by focusing their attention to Ipods and miscellaneous conversations over philosophy, politics and whether or not current team member Wesley George was the reincarnation of the legendary Oregon University runner Steve Prefontaine. Having put in some good training in the months leading up to the meet, the warriors were looking to post solid times and get a feel where the warriors stand as a team. Upon arriving, the warriors entered the hall and felt the chilled hamstring-pull-threatening air of the Thompson Arena. Most teams would have retreated there and then but the warriors continued their march with no hesitation to their temporary barracks and sentry post; or what some would call the spectator stands.

On the women’s side there were notable battle performances one could compare to such great battles of Troy or the infamous warfare tactics of Attila the Hun. Co-Captain Kate Bickle charged her way to a 3rd place finish in the 60m dash posting a time of 8.19 and a triumph 5th place in the 300m in 43.17. Kelly-Lynn left nobody uninjured on the battlefield as she dominated all by arriving across the line first in the 1500m with a time close to the daunting five minute barrier of 5:02. Jenna Bell, also known amongst members as Super Jenna, dressed and impressed, as she combated to a 2nd place finish in the 60m hurdles with a searing time of 9.80.

The men’s team had their work cut out for them as from their barracks they could see that the enemy would be no easy feat, nonetheless they laced up their shoes and prepared for what would be a gruesome battle. Two promising young warriors, Jacob Muirhead and Colin Mclean, both whom have never fought for the warriors, were ready to put their lives on the line to uphold the values and virtues of the Waterloo Warrior Track and Field Team. They fought ferociously in the 600m race and managed to post respectable times of 1:27.6 and 1:28.3 for Jacob and Colin respectively. The Co-Captain Colin Lawrence fought alongside his young followers in the 600m and he too managed to survive the grisly battle finishing 3rd overall in a time of 1:25.3. Wesley George, better known as Pre to some, released his fury on the enemy as only one man managed to outdo him in the 1500m race. Pre crossed the line in a time of 4:11 leaving his numerous adversaries bewildered and confused as to how one man could have conquered so many.

Unfortunately, with any battle comes friendly fire as was the case in the men’s 4x400 meter race. Most certainly due to the chaos and mayhem on the battle field the two 4x4 teams had pitted themselves against each other unknowingly. Luckily, before any serious damage was inflicted the teams realized the situation and ended up finishing first and second in times of 3:36.74 and 3:45.78.

As the warriors were conquering and expanding their reign over the southern territories of London, a lone and brave scout was sent deep into enemy territories on a reconnaissance mission to the frigid northern region of Ottawa. This scout was Julie Malleck , however not all went according to plan as she was confronted by awaiting enemies who challenged her to a dual in the 1500m run. Julie had no option but to accept as is the Warrior Code. Julie fought with honor and courage and she arose victorious over her rivals vanquishing her enemies to the humiliation of another Warrior first place in an admirable time of 4:49.25.

Head Coach Jason Dockendorff was very impressed with the team’s results and went on to say, “There were no big surprises this past weekend, just reassurance that we have a strong athlete pool, made up of both veterans and freshman. The coaches have done an excellent job in training the athletes and preparing them for the season ahead. The training programs are working well as was evident in the results.  Things look very promising for the months ahead and I’m excited to see what the Warriors will throw-down in the new year.”

Next up for the Warriors is the Christmas training camp in Florida followed by the Windsor CanAm Challenge on January 11 and 12.

OFSAA Champion Commits to UW

August 23, 2007

University of Waterloo Track and Field Head Coach Jason Dockendorff is pleased to announce that Jeremy Yang has committed to UW (Kinesiology) for this September. Jeremy, a native of Waterloo and a graduate of Bluevale Collegiate Institute, is the 2007 OFSAA gold medalist in the long jump. Jeremy’s outstanding OFSAA winning leap of 7.24m would have placed him in the top five at last year’s CIS national championships as well as break a 36 year old University of Waterloo varsity record. No doubt Jeremy will be a huge force on the team and in the CIS this year.

Another talented jumper, William Ibekwe, will also be joining the squad in the fall. William comes from Norco High School in Mira Loma California and is now enrolled in the biomedical sciences program at UW. Kyle Raymond headed to National Team Development Camp for Bobsleigh Canada

June 25, 2007

University of Waterloo veteran Track and Field athlete, Kyle Raymond, has been invited to Bobsleigh Canada’s National Team Development Camp to be held in Calgary Alberta, June 23-30. Kyle was selected based on his ‘National Team level’ results at a recent cross Canada recruiting drive. Kyle’s performance at the recruiting session held at York University’s Toronto Track & Field Centre University on May 12 ranked him up with the best in the country and is a good contender to make the national team. Kyle was introduced to this opportunity due to his strength, power, speed, and ability to apply them simultaneously. Something which makes for a great bobsleigh athlete candidate. Kyle is an instrumental part of the University of Waterloo Track and Field’s talented sprint group, attending the CIS championships the past 3 years as a member of the 4x200m relay team, while his best 200m time ranks him 3rd all-time for UW athletes. Kyle is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Biostatistics at UW.
