UW T&F Chalks up a Varsity Record and Updates UW’s All-time Best Performance List

March 8-10, 2007 – CIS Track and Field Championships, McGill University
By Kirk Ewen

To wrap up another season, this year’s CIS Track & Field Championship took place at the University of McGill in Montreal, Quebec.  Six male competitors and six female competitors traveled to Montreal to display their talents; this year was the first since the 2002-2003 season that UW qualified and sent female representatives.  UW’s sole individual entry was Jenna Bell in the women’s pentathlon.

Entered on the women’s side for both the 4x200m and 4x400m sprint relays were Kate Bickle, Jamie Hauseman, Cindy Willits, Jenna Bell, and Nancy Spreitzer.  On the men’s side was Emeka Ukwuoma, Kirk Ewen, Jeremiah Derksen, and Kyle Raymond running the 4x200m, and Ewen, Ukwuoma, Drew Haynes, and Colin Lawrence running the 4x400m.

The UW highlight of the meet was Jenna Bell surpassing her own varsity record in the women’s pentathlon with a score of 3403, then moving on to anchor both sprint relay’s.  By her teammates, Bell has been named is UW’s Ultimate Warrior.  Bell achieved two personal bests in the pentathlon and one more in the 4x400m.  Her 60mH performance in the pentathlon ranks her as the 4th fastest UW hurdler of all time.  Bell’s 3403 points earned her eighth place and one team point at the national championships.

Notable season improvements in the men’s 4x200m relay were shown by Derksen and Raymond with relay split improvements of 0.5s each, as well as Ewen with an impressive 21.9s split.  This performance ranks Kirk tied for the second fastest UW 200m relay athlete on record.  The men’s 4x200m performance is the second fastest of all-time at UW.  Their outstanding time of 1:29.21 was a season best, narrowly missed making the final by 0.01s, but scored the team 2 points finishing 7th.

The women finished twelfth in the 4x200m with a time of 1:46.31, more but more impressive performances were seen in the 4x400m.  Veteran Cindy Willits took 1 second off her time and second year athlete Jaime Hauseman shaved 0.4s off her time running a 58.6s.  This ranks Jaime’s relay split the 3rd fastest of all time at UW.  This helped to secure the team tenth spot in the 4x400m with a season best of 3:59.63.

For the men’s 4x400m, veterans Drew Haynesenator and Colin Lawrence took off half a second each, propelling the team to a ninth place finish with a season best time of 3:23.22.  This performance ranks them third fastest all-time at UW.

Overall the small UW squad finished 20th for the women and 17th for the men at this extremely competitive championship meet.  This wraps up the indoor season for the Waterloo team.  Head coach Jason Dockendorff is extremely happy with the results and is looking forward to next season.  Many of the athletes are returning next year so things look very good.

Warriors make their mark at CIS championships in Montreal.
By: Jenna Bell

This past weekend, 11 waterloo warriors traveled to McGill to compete at the CIS championships for track and field.  The warriors were successful at leaving their mark, as the men’s and women’s 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams sped around the tight curves on the reputably fast track.

The men’s 4x200m team (Emeka Ukwuoma, Kirk Ewen, Jeremiah Derksen and Kyle Raymond) flew by the finish line with a season’s best performance of 1:29.21, finishing 7th and scoring 2 points putting the Waterloo Warriors on the board.   In the 4x400m relay, the men (Kirk Ewen, Emeka Ukwuoma, Drew Haynes and Colin Lawrence) ran another season’s best time of 3:23.22 to place 9th.  The men’s 4x400m team was seeded 11th for the event and is commended for their consistently competitive result.  The men’s team will say a bitter sweet farewell to Captain Emeka Ukwuoma, and veterans Kyle Raymond and Drew Haynes after this season.  All three are graduating from University, and we wish them good luck in the future.

For the first time since 2002-2003 the women have sent not just one but both relay teams to the CIS championships.  The women’s team (Kate Bickle, Jaime Hauseman, Cindy Willits and Jenna Bell) supported by a very dependable (rookie, Nancy Spreitzer), were up to the challenge of showing the CIS that they had rightfully earned a spot in the CIS championships and are to be feared by the competition.  The girls unfortunately put out a sub-par performance in the 4x200m running a 1:46.31, over a second off the 4x200m team’s season’s best performance.  Disappointed in their overall performance the girls were determined to show their place in the CIS in the 4x400m relay.  In an intense race the warriors managed to obtain 3 personal best performances in the relay of nearly a second on each.  In the end the girls were not only right in with the competition, but also managed to break the 4 minute barrier with a season’s best time of 3:59.63 to finish in 10th position.  The girls have worked hard this season and are excited to train together in the summer and come back a stronger and even more competitive team.  All team members will be returning next year.

Individually the Warriors had one representative this year at the CIS championships.  Captain Jenna Bell set another varsity record in the women’s pentathlon this weekend with a final score of 3403 points.  She scored personal bests in the 60mH (9.06s) and the 800m (2:34.73).  Jenna looks forward to competing in the heptathlon this summer.

Overall the Warriors have had an outstanding season.  The whole team has worked hard and shown great support for each other throughout the whole season.  Thanks to an incredibly dedicated coaching staff and roster the Warriors track and field team have yet again made their mark in the CIS standings.

Warriors Fine-tune for OUA Championships at U of T

February 16, 2007 – Hal Brown Memorial Track and field Meet
By Colin Lawrence

The warriors headed off to the University of Toronto this past Friday to compete at their last scheduled meet before the OUA championships. The meet provided competitors one last chance to improve their times before heading to Windsor.

On the ladies side, there were multiple notable performances. Sophomore, Jaime Hauseman ran a stellar 300m dash leaving nothing put space between her and the rest of the pack with a first place finish and a life time personal best. Her teammate Cindy Willits also posted a quick time in the 300m placing 3rd. The distance squad was represented by Laura Sardone and Kelly-Lynne Spettigue with great performances in the 1000m and 1500m respectively. Laura achieved an all time personal best and Kelly-Lynne ran 5 seconds under the 5 minute barrier. Rookies Nancy Spreitzer and Aimee Dubeau rocked the house in both the triple and long jump with both of them placing top 5 in each event.

As usual the men’s team was lead by their speedy Captain Emeka Ukwuoma. Emeka picked up a bronze in the 60m dash and was nearly caught by his teammate Jeremiah Derksen who was right behind him in 4th. Leaping through the air like a gazelle was the supreme Jason Goetz. Jason jumped an awesome 13.96m which landed him silver. A race that caught the attention of the whole Waterloo team was the grueling 3000m duel between rookie Francis Coral-Mellon and sophomore Rob Bark. Both ran fantastic times with Rob finishing 10th and Francis 11th. To bring the night of exiting events to a close the men finally managed to bring four distance runners together to compete in a 4x800m. The team consisting of Wesley George, Colin Lawrence, Alex Magdanz, and Brandon Maleck was the only competitor in the race but they still managed to show their strength with a time of 7.59.

The team will continue to prepare for the OUA championships in Windsor next weekend.

Divided they Conquer: Warriors find Success at York and Ottawa

February 3-4, 2007 – York Classic/Ottawa National Capital Relays
By Kate Bickle

This past weekend the Warriors Track and Field team was split, with a small group headed to the nation’s capital and the remainder of the team competing at York University. Both competitions resulted in some notable strong performances.

At the York Classic on Saturday, veteran Laura Sardone ran to a 5th place finish in the women’s 1500m in 4:59.09 breaking the illustrious five minute barrier for the first time. Her rookie teammate Aimée Dubeau jumped 1.50m in the high jump placing her 4th in the field and ranking her 21st in the country. The men had some strong performances from the distance crew with Alex Magdanz continuing to impress with a 3rd place finish in the 1500m with a time of 3:59.72, this performance places him 24th in Canada. Jumper Jason Goetz had a successful day competing in the long jump (6th) and triple jump where he jumped 13.97m capturing him a gold medal. Jason’s jump ranks him 10th in the CIS.

Meanwhile a few hours east, eleven athletes from the roster traveled to Ottawa to run on the blazing fast 400m indoor track hoping to improve their ranking enough to secure them a spot at the CIS Championships. Rookie Kelly-Lynne Spettigue finished 4th in her 1500m and 1st in the 3000m. Captains Kate Bickle and Emeka Ukwuoma both competed in the 300m, and both running personal bests. Kate’s time of 41.45 placed her 2nd at the meet and ranks her 16th in the CIS, while Emeka ran 35.23 placing 5th at the meet and 11th place ranking in the country. The women’s 4x200m (Kate Bickle, Cindy Willits, Jaime Hauseman, Jenna Bell) managed to cut 5 seconds off of their previous best time running 1:45.14 placing them 2nd at the meet moving them up the rankings to 11th in the CIS. While the Team has next weekend off, captain Jenna Bell will be headed to Cornell to compete with some of the best multi-event athletes in North America. By Colin Lawrence

The Warriors of the UW Track and Field Team continued to represent the Black and Gold this past weekend at the annual Don Write Invitational. The meet provided the Warriors with an opportunity to face some competition from schools south of the border alongside the usual local competition.

On the women’s side, Captain Kate Bickle kicked the meet off to a good start picking up some hardware with a 3rd place finish in the 60m. Following suit, Jamie Hauseman ran a stellar performance in the 300m dash placing 2nd while achieving a life-time personal best. In addition, the women’s 4x400m consisting of Kate Bickle , Caitlin Lee , Katie Horricks and Cindy Willits captured the silver.

The men also had a good showing with Kirk Ewen leaving the field in the dust with a 1st place finish in the 600m. His teammate and Captain Colin Lawrence followed close behind in 3rd place. Captain of the UW Soccer team Paul Arnold showed that he can not only score goals but run a fast 300m dash finishing in 5th spot. In the distance sector, Alex Magdanz ran some admirable performances. Waterloo Moves Up the Rankings after a Successful Weekend

January 12-13, 2007
By Emeka Ukwuoma

After an impressive start to 2007 last week in Toronto, the young Warriors track and field team looked to step up their performances at the extremely competitive Can-Am meet in Windsor. Team co-captain Jenna Bell continued to impress and show why she's the team's work-horse as she competed in six events. The fourth-year Kinesiology major from Toronto had 2 life-time personal bests: in the 60 meter sprint, and the 60 meter hurdles (6th place). Jenna, though running minimal relays in her intercollegiate carrier so far, was also an integral part of the women's 4x400 meter relay team that placed fourth in at the meet. Her fellow teammates and supporters are confident that this hard-working, gifted athlete will shock the CIS this season in the pentathlon.

Jenna was not the only one doing damage on the oval. Veteran Kate Bickle and freshman sensation Kelly-Lynne "ice" Spettigue placed 3rd in the 300m sprint and 3000m run respectively. Kelly-Lynne also placed 5th in the 1500m living up to her nickname "ice" as she continues to remain cool under the pressure placed on her as a freshman. The 2006 cross-country All-Canadian is on pace for the same success on the track.

On the men's side, the 4x200m relay team turned heads by finishing on the podium. The team of Emeka Ukwuoma, Kirk Ewen, Kyle Raymond, and rookie Jeremiah Derksen sent an early message to the rest of the CIS that they will not go unnoticed; track, or no track to train on. This boast well of sophomore head coach Jason Dockendorff who lead the men's team to their best finish at the CIS championships last year in Saskatchewan. Other noteworthy performances included a 4th place finish by track rookie Wesley George in the 3000m and a close 5th in the 60m sprint by team co-captain Emeka Ukwuoma who struggled in the preliminaries and semi-finals, but was able to gather himself in the final.

Meanwhile, rookie phenom Julia Malleck competed at the Dome Super Saturday meet in Ottawa as she’s in the nation’s capital on a coop placement. Julia handily won the 1000m with an impressive time, only a few seconds off of the CIS standard.  Julia remains undefeated in the event this year and is currently ranked first in the CIS.
The Warriors travel to London next weekend to compete in the annual Don-Wright Team Challenge at the University of Western Ontario.
