CARRINGTON BRINGS HOME GOLD FROM WINDSOR
Last weekend, at the Canadian University Track and Field Championships held in Windsor, Ontario, 12 of our Warriors competed. Competing amongst two hundred of Canada's elite, our Warrior team again gave outstanding performances.
Leading the warrior tribe was veteran co-team captain Daniella Carrington. Going into these Championships ranked as the #1 female runner in the country, Daniella only had intentions of gold. In the first round of her 60m race, as a mere warm-up, the speedy Carrington ran an impressive Season Personal Best (SPB) of 7.54-- the fastest time in the country so far. Just over an hour later, Daniella stepped back on the track-- with her fellow teammates nervous and screaming frantically-- and did what she came to do. From the start of the race, it was Carrington and only Carrington. In clocking an outstanding 7.46 seconds: Daniella blew away her competitors; she blew away previous Life Time Personal Best (LTPB) of 7.51 seconds; she blew away her previous Varsity Record of the same time; and, she blew away the members of the packed audience-- who were left standing in applause. Taking home the gold, Daniella was again named to be as CIS All Canadian, and a definite part of the Canadian Elite. As the announcer said, "what an amazing end to her university career."
Our other Warrior Women took to the track and too provided some amazing results. Veteran co-team captain Kim Neumayer, in an extremely competitive 1000m race, ran to an eighth-place finish and a SPB of 2:59.15. Shortly after that race, Kim was back on the track again. This time as a member of the also eighth-place 4X800m relay team of Kim, Jill Patterson, Gina Jackson and Joanna Fedy. Each of these ladies came to compete, and that was evident by Joanna's SPB of 2:28.5 and also Jill's SPB of 2:17.8. Also, the women's 4X200m relay of Daniella, Sarah Snable, rookie Karolina Zukowski and Rebecca Murrant also ran well. Ladies, way to show our Warrior pride!
Our warrior men also represented us well. Jose Carvalho, in only his second season and his first individual CIS Championships competition, ran a great race to a ninth place finish in the men's 600m. Also, rookie sensation Andrew MacDonald-- though he had a cast on his hand-- held his own in the men's triple jump competition, and jumped his way to a eleventh place finish. In addition to competing individually, Andrew and Jose also stepped on to new ground. In replacing the injured Joe Brown and Dave Browne, Jose and Andrew joined Veterans Shane Ferth and Adrian Blair to compete in the men's 4X200m relay. Led by Adrian Blair, who matched his LTPB time of 21.9, our men's, though plagued by injuries, placed eleventh and are left vengeful for next season when they will be healthy and poised for gold.
A small and mighty warrior team faired extremely well against Canada's best. They will now take some time off before hitting to the track, sand pits and throwing rings again this summer. Now that the season is over, our team has to painfully say goodbye to a number of its veteran athletes. CIS Champion Daniella Carrington, along with Jill Patterson, Kim Neumayer and co-captain Paul Monte all graduate at the end of this term. Each of these athletes-- being an integral part of the warrior squad-- will be dearly missed. Nonetheless, Led by head coach Brent McFarlane, the remaining Warriors look forward to an even stronger team next year and are anxious to what will be a outstanding next season.
